Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my ChatGPT, Copilot, or Grok subscription instead of Capy credits?+
Yes: connect it in Settings → Models and choose a Codex, Copilot, or SuperGrok model. The OpenAI and Anthropic entries bill your Capy balance; API keys and gateways are included with Capy Lite and up. Anthropic's policy doesn't allow subscription sign-in in third-party apps, so you cannot connect a Claude subscription.
Do I need a paid plan to use the app?+
API keys and gateways need a plan, starting with Lite. In a Personal workspace, local threads using a connected subscription need no Capy credits, and your computer incurs no machine-time charge. Cloud machines and Capy-hosted models use credits, which come with a plan (you can also top up directly).
Which download should I pick?+
Choose a macOS .dmg for Apple Silicon or Intel, the Windows x64 installer, or a Linux build for x64 or arm64: the AppImage runs on any distribution, the .deb is for Debian and Ubuntu only, and the .tar.gz is for packaging Capy yourself. The page suggests a build based on your computer, but check the architecture because some browsers cannot report it. Every available build is listed below the button.
How do updates work?+
The app downloads updates in the background. A Restart to update control appears when an update is ready to install.
Does Capy run on my computer or in the cloud?+
You choose a machine for each thread: cloud threads execute commands in an isolated VM, while local threads work in a folder on your computer. Installing the desktop app and signing in pairs your computer with Capy. While that computer is online and the app is running, you can run threads on it from Capy in another browser, computer, or phone.
Can I import my Codex and Claude Code sessions?+
Yes, the desktop setup flow can import local sessions from Codex and Claude Code. You choose which sessions to import and which Capy projects they go into.
How do I sign in?+
Sign in from the app with Google, GitHub, or your email using a password or verification code, with the same account as capy.ai. You do not need to sign in on the website first.
What is different about the desktop app versus using Capy in the browser?+
The desktop app adds native tabs and windows, links from Slack and the browser that open in the app, and background app updates. It also connects your computer so Capy can work directly in your local folders. Once connected, that computer is available for threads from your other devices while it stays online and the app is running.
